The RA "Les Spadassins"
Fencing Club is in operation since 1960 and is one of the oldest
fencing clubs in Canada. It was co-founded by Dr. John ApSimon and
Wolfgang Grambart.
The RA Fencing Club has use of gym
facilities at the RA Centre. We have a dedicated training facility
with a lessons area, four permanent pistes, and an armoury, and
also have access to the RA Centre's West Gym on Monday and Thursday
nights.
Over the years, the RA Fencing Club
has enjoyed enviable success due to the great number of talented
fencers who have passed through their doors. The club boasts over
25 individual senior national championship titles and at least 15
for the team events. In addition, its elite fencers have consistently
been a part of national teams with club representatives on almost
every Olympic Team since the early 1970's.
The club's strength is in its strategy
of focusing on an intensive junior program. Young fencers are taught
in age-skill groups beginning at nine years of age. Classes are
conducted in an atmosphere of fun as well as discipline in all three
weapons (foil, épée and sabre). The club also offers
a variety of recreational and competitive programs for adults.
